Battle of Cannae.216 BC.

The famous victory of Carthiginian General Hannibal Barca, where in the Second Punic War,he lured the hated Romans into a deadly trap, killing thousands upon thousands. It's still studied and still attempted to this day.

It was a brilliant, superbly thought out victory, but the Romans refused to back down, although the defeat sent shockwaves through Rome.In the end, they changed their strategy, not letting themselves to give battle to Hannibal, and he eventually left, much to their immense relief. Although of course, he was still hunted, and after losing to Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Zama in 202 BC,he escaped, and still continued to be a major thorn in the Romans. I actually used to be a big fan of him,but was shocked to find out he'd deliberately ordered the massacre of an entire city.A horrible war crime.

In the end,Hannibal was tracked down, but he avoided being captured by the Romans,as he committed suicide.
