Remembering the Estonia.
30 years ago in September 30 1995,one of the worst ever shipping tragedies occurred, when the ferry Estonia sank in a stormy Baltic Sea,with the loss of 852 lives.
The ship lost its bow visor, allowing the sea to flood in,and what makes it worse, was that it could have been avoided. Tragically, the ship wasn't maintained, and even the captain was partially blamed,by having the ship go through high waves at speed. This increased the damage to the bow,and the cargo areas in the ship, weren't evenly distributed.
To this day, it's still unbelievable this tragedy happened, especially when we think of our safety standards at sea nowadays. Sadly, it was another tragedy of human error and neglect.
Rest in Peace to the 852.
