Newcastle United Memories.
I first started supporting and following Newcastle in 1974,just before the disastrous FA Cup Final against Liverpool, in which they lost 3-0.
The Final was indeed a disaster, and I was amazed the score was still 0-0 at half-time.Of course,it was as different story in the second-half.Liverpool won the match without going out of second gear.A certain Kevin Keegan scored twice, and it was a game to forget. This was the 73/74 season, and the FA Cup run was one of the most exciting ever.
Of course, pictured is Newcastle's no 9 at the time:Malcolm MacDonald, who was our star player when he played for the club, aka:Supermac. Malcolm was a brilliant centre-forward, and his goal tally for Newcastle was tremendous. Unfortunately in this game,it all went horribly wrong. He actually bragged that he was going to score nine on the day! I can still remember his wild, mistimed half-volley, which went miles over the Liverpool bar.I realised it wasn't going to be a good day for us then.
Some did play out of their skins though.Iam McFaul,Frank Clark and Alan Kennedy did well, whilst Terry Hibbitt worked hard, but was always running into a brick wall from the Liverpool defence. In the end,he was blocked off.Terry McDermott got the MOTM for Newcastle, but alas:that was it.The performance was one to forget, and it still hurts to this day.
Aside from the bitter disappointment at the end,the season wasn't bad .And despite some mis-givings from some players afterwards:they all received a hero's welcome when they came back to Newcastle.Much more better than Liverpool's.
